Gallery Wall 101 from a Gallery Wall Addict

4:00:00 AM

If you know me, then you'll know I have a very deep love affair with gallery walls. I love the way they look and that there are so many directions you can take the wall. I think they are a great way to display art, medals, pictures, knick-knacks, anything really. My way to create one is rather straightforward, but there are essentials to any gallery wall that really makes them pop. So start with a  few of your favorite things and try out some of my tips. They really help take a flat gallery wall into a showstopper.

Add Some Texture // I love the way a gallery wall looks with flat frames and then something textured. For mine, I chose to do 3 different shaped mirrors. They added a really nice flair to the wall and helped take it from flat to fab. You can add texture in many different ways. You could always do mirrors, clock, monogram, letter or some kind of antique. I really think adding a little bit of texture helps add interest to the gallery display.

Mix It Up // A lot of people use the same frame over and over in the gallery wall, which is really lovely. I, on the other hand, love mixing my metals and colors. I am not sure I am formal enough yet for a gallery wall of all the same frame, but if you are go for it! I like mixing gold frames, with copper-y colored frames and black. Everything really pops against each other, because nothing is the same. It's different, which is so totally me. Play around with colors, I promise it'll look good. Also, balance big and small. There's nothing wrong with having a few bigger pieces and some medium and a small one. The difference in sizes really makes it interesting to look at.

Practice Makes Perfect // A really good way to nail a gallery wall on the first go around is to try it out beforehand. Lay it on the ground, use painter's tape to measure out the exact placing, or just make small pencil marks as to where you want them to go. No body enjoys hammering into the wall a million times, because the holes aren't where they need to be the first time. Also, make sure to use a level. One of my biggest pet peeves is when pictures are hung and not laying straight. It kills me, but a level can help fix that.

Find a Focal Point // A good gallery wall has a focal point. And from that point, everything expands outward. I would say pick your favorite pice or thing and hang it as the main focus. From there, space things out to your liking. I'm big on symmetry so my wall is as close to symmetrical as it gets. If you like scattered, I'd suggest still having a focal point to draw the eye and not confuse people. I picked a print with the most impact and went from there.

These are just some tips on how to assemble a gallery wall. Use anything you like and have whatever you dream of up there. Hit up flea markets, thrift stores, Etsy, Home Goods, Target, and so on to find cool and fun pieces for a great gallery wall.

Have any of y'all tried a gallery wall yet?
