Calligraphy 101

3:25:00 PM

It's one of my favorite weeks of the year and I finally went to a calligraphy class! I have been DYING to go to one for sooo long. All of them are normally booked up months in advance or just extremely pricey! On Saturday, I went to Paper and Ink Arts in Nashville to a Molly Margret's Christmas Calligraphy class! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!

I have to admit, I have never taken a class before, let alone done any calligraphy. When I got there, I was so nervous! I didn't want to do a bad job! Just as I expected though, everyone there was basically a calligraphy expert and very proud of their perfect skills. The teacher was extremely patient and really awesome! We learned how to use a straight pen and nib and a pointed pen to make a modern calligraphy style! It was so hard and pretty overwhelming at first. There are so many rules and things to remember, it's hard to keep that all in mind at once!

We got to experiment with creating a super fun alphabet and then a different style alphabet with an ink pen.I was HORRIBLE at first. I literally could not grasp the concept. Then I was mortified that I was so bad, because everyone was perfect! They all had beautiful pieces...#awkward. Molly mentioned my G's and J's were really great. I giggled, because of course they were, a G was my maiden name and a J is my last name now!  We did get to play around with flourishes, white ink, and different kinds of papers. I had an absolute blast despite being awful! The best part of it all was she let us keep our pens, nibs, and ink! I was able to go home and practice some more. At home, I finally got the hang of it and my lettering turned out much better.

You can totally tell a difference between the two sets of pictures! I was not the best at first!

Even though I wasn't the best, I had an absolute blast. I'm glad I got to check off another item on my 101 in 1001 list! I want to get better at calligraphy, because it's such a fun skill to have! Let's just say, I'll be going back to Calligraphy 101 to get a better understanding of how to write those darn letters!

Have y'all ever taken a calligraphy class?

  4. This sounds like a great time. Calligraphy is something that I'd like to take up but my penmanship is poor enough with a regular pen, I don't think I have the patience for it.
