Kentucky Derby Tips + Giveaway

4:00:00 AM

The Kentucky Derby is quite the major event! I know, I went in 2015! As a first timer, I was beyond lucky enough to have a pro teach me the Derby ropes before we went off to the races! She is a full time Louisville, Derby attendee! So with that little background info, I have compiled a list of my tips for how to have the absolute best time at the Kentucky Derby!

Just a bit of a head's up, if you want to go the infield at Churchill Downs, then this post is not for you! I've never done the infield! I had a seat in a box, so I for sure experienced the Derby in a totally different way than anyone in the infield! So just a quick disclaimer on where we sat and whatnot.

Without further a do, here are my top 5 tips for how to make the most of your time at the Derby!!

#1: Wear a cute hat, but a hat that shades your face! I cannot stress this one enough! I wore a gorgeous fascinator last year, but that did absolutely nothing for me when it came to keeping the sun off my face! The sun is so strong and you're out there literally allllll day. Either wear a big hat or a lot of sunscreen! Whatever works best for you!

#2: The Derby is not just one race, it's actually 13! I honestly thought it was only the one race that we all watched, but boy was I incorrect! It's actually 13 different races, but only one is televised and considered the race for the Triple Crown. So get there early and enjoy all the gorgeous hats and horses!

#3: Bring a lot of cash! The drinks inside the horse track cost at a minimum $8 and parking costs at least $20. Mint Juleps are obviously the most popular drink and luckily for you they come in an awesome glass cup! If you're really willing to splurge, there is an 18k mint julep made of gold, silver, and diamonds! A lot of the food stands will take credit cards.

#4: Dress to impress! Literally everyone except about 5% of the people are beautifully dressed. The men look incredible in their suits and the women stun with their amazing hats. You may see someone with the same dress or hat as you, but if so, take a picture with them! Why not?! The Derby is not the time to skimp of looking lovely. There are a select few who show up in cut off jean shorts and t-shirts. Don't be in that select few! Pro tip: bring a pair of flip flops for when the long walk back to the parking lot! It'll be a lifesaver...I promise!

#5: Participate in all the activities going on around the track. You can place bets on different races, watch the gorgeous horses parade around the paddock, and even watch the millionaires come in on the red carpet! There is so much going on and so many cool things to have fun with! Take advantage of all the free stuff! There is a lot of it! The Derby is just so much fun and will totally entertain you all day long.

All in all, just have so much fun! The Derby is an absolute experience and the memories will stick with you forever. I cannot wait to go back and do the Derby again! Don't forget to get a commemorative cup, because American Pharaoh is on the back with a small crown next to his name! Grab a mint julep, a fun hat, and watch the races!

Head's up! I'm hosting a giveaway on my Instagram! It's a Kate Spade bag filled with tons of my absolute favorite goodies!! Make sure to enter for your chance to win!

  7. I would love to attend the Kentucky Derby! We have a local racetrack here where I live but nobody dresses up in fabulous hats. Also, there are no mint juleps haha! Oh well, I will have to take a vacation to Kentucky one of these days!
